Overview of the Role System

In Marvel Rivals, players select heroes from an expansive Marvel roster and form teams of six in fast-paced, objective-driven battles. Unlike traditional role queues, Marvel Rivals offers a flexible system where any hero can be picked as long as they're not already on the team. This freedom—while it can sometimes lead to imbalance—lets you experiment with unconventional team compositions and unlock powerful team-up abilities that reflect the iconic Marvel synergy.

The Three Core Roles

1. Vanguard: The Indomitable Frontline

Vanguards are the game's tanks. These heroes boast huge health pools and abilities to absorb enemy damage and protect their teammates. Their kits typically include damage mitigation tools like shields and barriers that can control the battlefield.

Key Attributes:

  • Durability: High HP makes them ideal for contesting objectives.
  • Crowd Control: Many Vanguards feature abilities that block or deflect enemy attacks.
  • Area Denial: With skills that can shape the battlefield (think Groot's vine walls or Doctor Strange's magical shields), Vanguards force enemies to rethink their approach.

Popular Vanguard Heroes:

Hulk, Doctor Strange, Groot, Magneto, Peni Parker, Thor, Venom, and Captain America.

Strategic Tips:

  • Hold the Line: Use your durability to soak up damage and hold choke points during objectives.
  • Create Space: Position yourself to force opponents away from your Duelists and Strategists.
  • Timing is Key: Activate your damage mitigation abilities just before enemy ultimates hit to protect your team.

2. Duelist: The Precision Damage Dealer

Duelists are designed to inflict maximum damage and secure crucial eliminations. They excel in one-on-one combat and often come with high mobility and burst damage capabilities—but typically have lower HP compared to Vanguards.

Key Attributes:

  • High Damage Output: Their abilities are optimized to take down enemies quickly.
  • Mobility: Many Duelists can reposition rapidly, flanking enemies or engaging from unexpected angles.
  • Versatility: Whether engaging in melee or ranged combat, Duelists are your go-to when securing kills.

Popular Duelist Heroes:

Black Panther, Hela, Iron Man, Magik, Namor, The Punisher, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Storm, Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, and Wolverine.

Strategic Tips:

  • Flank and Focus: Avoid head-on confrontations by flanking and targeting isolated opponents.
  • Secure Eliminations: Your goal is to pick off high-value targets, but always be aware of your low health—fall back when necessary.
  • Coordination: Work closely with your Vanguard to ensure you're protected while you deliver your burst damage.

3. Strategist: The Backbone of Team Support

Strategists are the support heroes who keep the team in the fight through healing, buffs, and sometimes unique utility. Although they are generally more fragile, their ability to turn the tide of battle with timely support makes them indispensable.

Key Attributes:

  • Healing and Buffs: Their abilities often restore health or boost the damage output of allies.
  • Utility: Some Strategists can provide crowd control or even revive fallen teammates, shifting the momentum during intense battles.
  • Positioning: Typically positioned at the rear, Strategists must balance self-preservation with providing crucial support.

Popular Strategist Heroes:

Loki, Luna Snow, Mantis, and Rocket Raccoon.

Strategic Tips:

  • Stay Back: Position yourself safely at the back of the team to avoid drawing enemy fire.
  • Prioritize Support: Focus on healing and buffing teammates rather than engaging directly unless a situation demands it.
  • Smart Use of Ultimates: Many Strategists have game-changing ultimate abilities—use them at critical moments to swing momentum in your team's favor.
