How to Play Krakoa
The setup you need to know
Krakoa is a Domination map with three rotating sub-areas: the Grove, the Carousel, and the Cradle. It's a best two-out-of-three format where each round happens in one of the three variants.
The defining feature is the teleporter network. Each variant has three separate teleporter sets that function as instant transportation between predetermined locations. While the maps contain numerous pathways and chambers, many serve primarily aesthetic purposes, with the core tactical movements revolving around several key corridors and the teleportation systems.
The Grove is the most open variant, centered around a massive tree with statues of the Quiet Council. The Carousel is more enclosed with Emma Frost's White Palace. The Cradle contains the Arbor Magna and tends to have more interior spaces. All three variants have significant verticality and cliff edges.
Playing offense (capturing the point)
Use the teleporters proactively. Don't just walk the conventional pathway, since that's predictable and gets you picked off. Mix up your routes by alternating between the standard pathway, teleporter shortcuts, and the destructible barrier route on the northern perimeter (which has hidden health packs).
Stagger management is everything. Domination is decided by respawn timing. If half your team dies, don't trickle back in one by one. Regroup at spawn, take a teleporter together, and walk in as a six-stack.
Use the cliff edges. Krakoa has multiple drop points on most variants. Emma Frost's grab-kick combo and Magneto's push can score free environmental kills. Position knockback heroes near the edges and force enemies into bad spots.
Save big ults for cluster moments. Moon Knight, Iron Man, Storm, and Scarlet Witch all have ults that punish teams forced to stand on the point. Time them for when defenders are committed to the cap.
Playing defense (after capping the point)
Control the teleporters. Establish teleporter control protocols and coordinate usage to prevent enemy exploitation. If you can keep eyes on the exit points of all three teleporter pairs, you'll catch flankers as they pop out.
Hold the high ground. All three variants offer substantial vertical gameplay elements that skilled teams can exploit. Don't sit ground-level on the point. Put your DPS and supports on the elevated angles while your tank holds the cap.
Watch for cliff plays. The same edges you can use offensively work against you. Don't position your healers near drops without peel, especially when Emma Frost or Magneto is on the enemy team.
Use Groot walls or Peni nests if you're running those heroes. The variants with more enclosed sections (especially the Cradle) are perfect for area denial setups.
General things that matter
Teleporter timing matters. Each teleporter has cooldowns and activation periods. Understanding these timings creates tactical advantages. If you know when a teleporter is on cooldown, you can predict which route the enemy will take next.
Flexible routing beats rigid pathway adherence. Each map variant demands different route prioritization based on team composition, objective status, and enemy positioning. Don't just memorize "the right path." Adapt based on what the enemy is doing.
Each variant rewards different comps slightly. The Grove favors ranged poke, the Carousel is more mid-range with brawl potential, and the Cradle rewards close-quarters fighters. Be ready to swap between rounds.
Watch the lore details. The map is packed with X-Men easter eggs: statues of Quiet Council members at the Grove, Shogo (Jubilee's son) flying away at the Carousel, the Arbor Magna resurrection chamber at the Cradle. Not gameplay-relevant, but worth noticing if you're a fan.
There are four achievements on this map. If you're hunting cosmetic unlocks, look up the specific requirements before queueing. Some need defender wins, some need specific hero plays.
Last thing: the teleporter network is what separates good Krakoa players from great ones. Average players walk the obvious path. Good players use teleporters to flank. Great players time teleporter use to bait the enemy team into committing to one location while they hit a different one. Spend a few practice games learning where each teleporter takes you, because nothing kills your map IQ faster than teleporting somewhere unexpected mid-fight.
