How to Play Sanctum Sanctorum
The setup you need to know
Sanctum Sanctorum is played in Doom Match, a free-for-all where you take on 11 other players with any hero you like. The match ends as soon as someone reaches 16 eliminations, and everyone in the top half of the scoreboard wins, so you only have to out-score most of the lobby rather than reach 16 yourself.
Doctor Strange's home is packed with inter-dimensional portals, both inside the building and around it. Between those portals and the purple rift tears that teleport you across the map, there are plenty of ways to reach a fight quickly or slip out of one.
The map mixes narrow corridors, claustrophobic hallways, and wide-open halls, so different parts of the map favor different hero types. There's no payload or capture point. Just kill, survive, score.
Playing the mode properly (solo strategy)
Hunt low-HP players, not full-HP players. This is the single biggest tip for Doom Match. When two players fight each other, both finish the fight at low health. Hitting the winner with a quick burst nets you a free elimination. Camping a high-traffic intersection and stealing finishes is way more efficient than dueling head-on.
Use portals to escape and reposition. The Sanctum's portals are your best survival tool. If you're losing a fight or being chased, dive a portal and pop out somewhere else. Other players won't always follow you through, especially if they're already low.
Don't fight from spawn. Right after a death, you're vulnerable while reorienting. Take a moment to scout your spawn area, identify nearby fights, and then engage when you have a tactical advantage.
Stay on the move. Standing still in Doom Match means someone will third-party you. Always be repositioning, healing, or finding a new target.
Play the corridors with melee, the halls with range. If you locked Iron Fist or Black Panther, force fights in the narrow halls and stairs where range can't punish you. If you picked Punisher or Hawkeye, hold the wider rooms and angles where short-range heroes can't reach you fast.
Track the leaderboard. You don't need first place to win. You need top half. Around the halfway mark, check who's near the bottom and look for them. Killing players who already have low scores keeps them away from threatening you.
Use the high ground. Look for open windows and upper rafters that let you drop down onto enemies from behind. The Sanctum has multiple vertical positions that newer players don't use, and dropping in for a quick burst before retreating to portal is a high-percentage play.
Specific spot tips
The library is a meat grinder. One of the hardest areas to push through is the library. The narrow stairs make it easy for defenders to spam projectiles. If you're trying to chase someone into the library, expect to take damage. If you're holding the library, you can farm players running up the stairs.
The portals reset map control. Many players forget you can use Doctor Strange's portals as your own escape, even if you're not playing Strange. Dive a portal mid-chase and your pursuer often won't follow.
Outside the Sanctum is also playable. Don't stay inside the whole match. The exterior area has the Mr. Knight easter eggs and offers different sightlines for ranged heroes.
General things that matter
This is a free-for-all, so don't help anyone. If you see two players fighting, wait for one to die, then kill the survivor. Helping someone in Doom Match is just creating a new threat for yourself.
Self-sustaining heroes are king. Anyone with self-heal (Wolverine, Iron Fist, Venom, Adam Warlock) or shields (Magneto, Captain America) survives longer than glass-cannon heroes. Even with strong burst damage, fragile heroes get third-partied constantly.
Track your eliminations carefully. The cap is 16 eliminations to end the match, but you only need top half by points. If you're already in third place and there's still time, play safer rather than greedy.
Use ultimates strategically. In Doom Match, ults are way more powerful because no one peels for the victim. A Punisher ult in the library or a Hulk ult in a crowded hall can net 3-4 eliminations instantly.
Watch for relic and artifact easter eggs. The Sanctum has Mr. Knight's limousine, his agency, and various relics. None of these affect gameplay, but they're fun to spot if you have downtime between fights.
Last thing: Doom Match is way more about psychology than mechanics. Knowing when to disengage, when to third-party, and when to hide and heal matters more than landing perfect shots. The players who win consistently are the ones who pick favorable fights instead of dueling everyone they see. Don't ego-challenge a full-HP Hulk when there's a low-HP Mantis around the corner. Pick the easier target every time.
