How to Play Midtown

The setup you need to know

Midtown tends to favor attackers due to its open pathways and limited defensive chokepoints near the later checkpoints. Defenders need to be extra vigilant and strategic when setting up ambushes.

The map has a unique mechanic called Recursive Destruction. These points appear in red when using Chrono Vision (B-key) and become available for rebuilding after the convoy reaches a specific checkpoint nearby. To rebuild, just attack the red-highlighted destroyed structure. This is especially useful for defenders, who can restore cover that attackers blew up earlier. The downside is that being on one of these structures while it's rebuilding disrupts your positioning.

Playing as attacker

The first checkpoint is the open street section near the Baxter Building. This is where you have the most room to work with and can set the tone of the match. Push together. Don't trickle in from spawn or you'll get picked off one at a time.

The second checkpoint takes you into Grand Central Terminal and the surrounding area. This subway section is claustrophobic, with long hallways and tight corridors. It's described as cramped, which contrasts sharply with the longer sightlines in the first and third sections, demanding a shift in tactics.

This is where flanking becomes everything. There's an elevated white path that puts you on a platform over a common defensive holding area, but it reveals your position. The pink path is a more discreet flank that doesn't expose you on the obvious platform and gives you extended flank routes. A red path cuts down a secluded hallway into the center of the building, while yellow is the most common route to the convoy.

The point: never push the front door alone. Send a diver or flanker through the side routes while your main group pressures the obvious path. If you W-key through the choke without splitting their attention, defenders will hold you forever.

The third checkpoint is the Stark Tower final push. There are fewer flanks here, which means more direct engagements. Key routes like the Yellow Path matter, you have to deal with the Stark Sentinel, and you need to win the crucial duels around corner chokes. This is where ult economy matters most. Coordinate your ults instead of dropping them one at a time.

Playing as defender

On defense, hold the first chokepoint as long as possible. Don't give up the open area unless your whole team has been killed. Your team will still have enough time for another fight before the attackers cap the final point.

Time wasted at the first checkpoint is time taken away from later attacks. Every second they spend stuck on point one is a second they don't have for point three.

At the second checkpoint, watch the flanks obsessively. With so many alternative routes through Grand Central, a static defense gets bypassed instantly. Defenders can also use the flanking routes to get behind attackers, so don't think of them as just attacker tools. Send one person on enemy flank watch and assume the divers are coming.

When you lose a checkpoint, use Recursive Destruction. If attackers broke key cover to push you, rebuild it to reset your hold. This is one of the most underused defender tools on this map.

General things that matter

With so many pathing options, brawl comps work really well on every point of Midtown. Even on areas with long sight lines, close-range heroes can attack from multiple angles, minimizing damage taken by using cover and playing in and out of the side rooms. So unlike Arakko where brawl struggles, here it's actually viable.

Verticality matters a lot, especially on points one and three. Choose heroes whose entire kit synergizes with elevated positions for maximum impact. Spider-Man, Iron Man, Storm, Psylocke all thrive on the rooftops.

One more thing on stagger: this map's tight chokes make it really tempting to keep feeding into the same fight. Don't. If two or three teammates die, regroup at spawn and walk in together. Trickling = losing on Midtown more than almost any other map.

If you're new to the map, walk it in practice mode and pay attention to which buildings have interior access. Knowing those internal routes is the difference between a clean flank and getting boxed in the street.
