How to Play Thebes

The setup you need to know

Thebes is a three-stage Convoy map that swaps environments as the barge moves. The opening stage is a sun-baked street outside Apocalypse's pyramid, the middle stage takes the fight inside the pyramid's machinery on several floors, and the last stage opens up into a wide courtyard on the way to the Temple of Khonshu. Each stage rewards a different kind of team, so treat hero swaps as part of the plan rather than a sign that something went wrong.

The map's signature tools are sand currents. Updrafts throw you straight up to the higher ledges, and sand slides carry you quickly from one part of the map to another. Both work for either team, which means a player who knows where they lead can rotate, escape or arrive behind a fight far faster than walking. Spend a custom game learning where every updraft lands before you take Thebes into ranked.

Thebes also has more side passages than most Convoy maps. Almost every choke has a second and third way around it, so a team that only walks the payload lane will get picked apart from angles it never checked.

Playing as attacker

At the first checkpoint the exit from spawn splits three ways. The middle lane follows the barge into a narrow alley, which is the first real choke. The left side climbs to a raised room above a drop, and the right side runs past a tower to an elevated platform, each with a pair of health packs. Stairs on both flanks lead behind the alley, so the cleanest push sends two players up the sides while the rest of the team pressures the front. Walking everyone down the middle into a set-up defense is how attacks stall at the pyramid entrance.

Inside the pyramid, the second stage is built in layers. The left upper platform is a shortcut to the back of the payload route, the right side climbs to a second floor with long sightlines, and the middle lane has two short chokes in a row. Take the high ground first: whoever owns the upper level controls both chokes below it. The launch pad on the lower level sends you high and drops you down a slide toward a health pack, which makes it a quick way back into the fight after a trade.

The final stage is open and flat by comparison. The left side is a large space with a long cliff edge, and the right side follows the barge into a central courtyard that links back to the left before turning toward the temple. Bring a mix of ranged and mobile heroes here, and keep your supports away from that cliff edge where a single knockback ends the fight for them.

Save your ultimates for the later stages. Spending one to win a few seconds of payload movement early leaves you empty-handed in the final room, where defenders get their best position of the map.

Playing as defender

At the first checkpoint, hold the pyramid doorway rather than stepping out onto the open sand. Fighting in the street exposes your Strategists to every angle the attackers have, while the doorway funnels them into a narrow space your team can cover. Keep one player watching each stairway; the flank behind the alley is the most common way this hold breaks.

In the second stage, your strongest spot is the upper level over the two middle chokes. Damage heroes up there can punish anyone walking the lane, while a Vanguard below blocks the barge. Watch the left upper platform, because it leads straight behind your line.

For the final stage, try to drag fights into the open left side. Fighting there keeps attackers off the barge, and any hero with knockback has a cliff to work with. In the last room, close the side entrances so attackers have to come through the narrow middle lane, where area damage hits several of them at once.

Hero picks

High-ground and flying heroes such as Iron Man, Ultron and Phoenix shine inside the pyramid. Flankers like Venom, Black Panther and Psylocke can use the side passages and sand currents to reach the backline. Heroes with knockbacks, such as Invisible Woman and Emma Frost, turn the last stage's cliffs into eliminations. In ranked results, Blade, Mister Fantastic and Iron Fist do better on Thebes than they usually do.
