How to Play Phoenix

  • Master the Spark Stack Mechanic: Jean’s Pyrokinetic Surge and Telekinesis Burst apply Spark stacks, triggering explosions after two stacks. Prioritize landing these abilities in quick succession on grouped enemies to maximize AoE damage and chain reactions, especially in tight spaces or objectives.
  • Use Dark Ascent for Mobility and Positioning: Activate Dark Ascent to gain free flight and ammo replenishment. Use it to reposition above choke points, dodge high-damage ultimates like Hulk’s, or chase down low-health targets. Save it for critical moments to maintain map control.
  • Time Endsong Inferno for Maximum Impact: Her ultimate, Endsong Inferno, is devastating but requires precise timing. Use it to disrupt enemy ultimates (e.g., Hela’s or Magneto’s), clear summons (Groot’s walls, Rocket’s beacons), or wipe objectives. Aim to hit multiple enemies during the ground slam for maximum AoE damage.
  • Leverage Telepathic Illusion for Survivability: Telepathic Illusion lets you teleport and leave an explosive afterimage. Use it to escape divers like Wolverine or to bait enemies into traps near objectives. Place afterimages in high-traffic areas to apply Spark stacks and disrupt enemy pushes.
  • Pick the Team-Up That Fits the Fight: Circle of Life swaps Psionic Detonation for a stunning blast that cuts enemy healing by 40%, so take it against teams with strong sustain, and even more so with Hela on your side. Telekinetic Beatdown adds a punching shockwave that chains between grouped enemies and heals you on each hit, and it reaches further with Rogue.

Phoenix Combos

  1. Stun and burn: Psionic Detonation (Right Click) under a target, then Cosmic Flames (Left Click) while they are stunned and slowed by 30%. Each blast and each shot adds a Spark, so the third one sets off the 45-damage explosion quickly.
  2. Illusion trap: Telepathic Illusion (Shift) away from a diver, let the illusion explode for 50 and a Spark, then land a Cosmic Flames critical hit (Left Click). The crit adds 2 Sparks, which is enough for an explosion.
  3. Barrier breaker: Endsong Inferno (Q) onto a team hiding behind barriers or bonus health. The shockwave removes both and applies 2 Sparks, so each Cosmic Flames hit (Left Click) right after it sets off an explosion.

Strengths

  • Spark explosions spread through groups: each one deals 45 to the marked enemy and 20 to anyone within 4 m, and adds a Spark to them, so a crowded point fills up with explosions.
  • Two ways to move: Telepathic Illusion is an 8 m teleport during which she cannot be damaged, and Dark Ascent gives free flight with a 50% speed boost from a 1,200-point meter.
  • Endsong Inferno's shockwave destroys summons and barriers and strips all enemy bonus health, and she gets her full health back when the ultimate ends.
  • Psionic Detonation stuns for 0.3 seconds and then slows by 30% for 2 seconds on a 10-second cooldown, a dependable setup for her follow-up shots.

Weaknesses

  • Only 250 health, and her sustain is small: each Spark explosion gives 5 bonus health, up to 25, which starts decaying after 4 seconds.
  • Cosmic Flames loses damage past 10 m and drops to 65% by 30 m, so she has to fight at mid range rather than from far back.
  • Divers like Magik and Daredevil are a threat once Telepathic Illusion is on its 12-second cooldown, since outside her ultimate it is her only way to avoid damage.

Phoenix Abilities

  • Hela: Phoenix can pick Circle of Life, which swaps Psionic Detonation for a stun followed by two blasts that cut enemy healing by 40% for 3 seconds. With Hela on the team every blast adds 2 Sparks instead of 1, so her explosions come much faster.
  • Rogue: the Telekinetic Beatdown loadout (C) fires a shockwave that, on a hit, punches for 55 and jumps between up to 3 nearby enemies, healing Phoenix 50 per hit. With Rogue on the team it reaches a fourth target and heals more.
  • Cyclops and Black Widow: both have a loadout that Phoenix enhances. Cyclops's Slim and Red sets enemies hit by Ricochet Force on fire, and with Phoenix on the team her Spark explosions shorten its cooldown; Black Widow's Burning Bullets turns Plasma Cannon into an instant laser that gets a second charge with Phoenix.
  • A Vanguard who keeps enemies bunched up: her Spark explosions reach everyone within 4 m, so a tank who holds the enemy together on the point lets each explosion hit more targets.

Phoenix Counters

Phoenix has 250 health and Telepathic Illusion is her only way to dodge damage, so wait for her to teleport and punish her during its 12-second cooldown. Fast divers such as Magik and Daredevil can reach her before her Sparks build up. Don't stack on top of each other when she is landing shots on your team: each Spark explosion hits everyone within 4 m and marks them too, so spreading out breaks the chain.
