How to Play Symbiotic Surface

The setup you need to know

Symbiotic Surface is a Domination/Convoy hybrid map. The attacking team must capture Knull's essence and escort it to the opposite end. The map's unique feature is the symbiote pieces, which when hit will stretch or grow to form bridges, lift characters, and obstruct passageways.

This symbiote interaction system is the map's defining feature. A symbiote bridge you can interact with circles directly behind the objective on the second floor, giving you high ground advantage. There's also a symbiote you can shoot or melee that extends a bridge for a few seconds you can cross.

There's also a symbiote mechanism along the green route that can create walls blocking escape paths, potentially trapping opponents in confined areas. Learn which symbiotes do what before you queue.

Playing as attacker

For the capture phase, this is where the Convergence stagger problem hits hardest. The red route is the most common secondary choice. It holds a health kit off route in the corner of the room. You'd use this path if attacking the objective head on.

Don't push the main route alone. There are multiple options around the capture point: yellow gives you a way to reach the enemy backline from behind, with a health kit in the small room in the upper right corner perfect for divers. You can jump up the ledge from yellow and skip directly to green for faster routes.

There's also a destructible wall (marked X on common map diagrams). Breaking this gives a very unique angle on the objective while staying well protected, perfect for snipers to quietly pick off low-HP targets like healers.

For the escort phases, running dive comps can translate to quick captures of each point and let you bypass the enemy's first line of defense. Don't fight defenders in their setup. Drop or fly into their backline and force them to turn.

Use the symbiote bridges actively. The high ground access they provide is the difference between getting picked off in the cave choke and angling onto defenders from above.

For the final push, a concealed pathway beneath the mushroom tree formations provides access to elevated positioning directly above the objective, useful for final assault coordination.

Playing as defender

For the capture phase, stack chokes with area denial. Peni nest + Groot wall makes the central capture point a death zone.

Use the Symbiote elevator to quickly get to high ground if the attackers try to flank. The high ground next to the jump pad is extremely important for the attacking team to control because it gives them a vantage point over the checkpoint and both entrances the defenders can use to return from spawn. If you let them have this position, you'll struggle to even leave spawn safely.

Use and watch the side tunnels. Even though the final objective area is very open, there are still many options for flanking pathways. Don't get caught only watching straight ahead.

Defenders have multiple spawn exit options that many players overlook. Rather than defaulting to the central route, defenders can use wall-hugging paths on both flanks to achieve surrounding positions around the objective area. There's an underutilized second exit door with health restoration items in the upper-right corner.

Area Control team comps make it extremely difficult for attackers to push up when defending. Captain America, Peni Parker, Squirrel Girl, and Rocket Raccoon work well for this.

General things that matter

The symbiote interactables aren't decoration. Pros use them constantly to create new sightlines, escape pressure, or surprise the enemy team. Spend time in custom games hitting each one to see what it does.

Stagger management matters double on Convergence. The capture phase means losing a fight doesn't just cost positioning, it potentially resets capture progress. If half your team is dead, regroup at spawn and walk in together. Trickling onto the point one-by-one is a loss.

The terrain mix means hero swaps matter. Squirrel Girl is amazing in the caves but worse in the open final stretch. Punisher is great in the open but worse in the tight cave choke. If you locked in a hero for point one and the map is now favoring something different, swap on respawn.

Establish chokepoints in the cave systems and use the natural cover provided by the organic structures. The terrain itself is your cover. Use it as a wall instead of running through it.

Last thing: this is one of the maps where Jeff ults can win entire games if used well. The map's open final sections have multiple cliff edges, and Jeff's "vore-and-spit" ult can send the entire enemy team into the void if timed right. If you're playing Jeff, scout where the kill edges are before the fight.
