How to Play Lower Manhattan

The setup you need to know

Defense dominates Lower Manhattan because attackers face two chokepoints before even reaching the capture point. This is a defender's map, period. If you're attacking, expect to work harder than usual.

The map's defining mechanic is the UAV surveillance scan. The scanner activates roughly every 90 seconds to 3 minutes. Before it triggers, a loud alarm sounds, followed by a voice announcement, and a large green scanning field sweeps across the map. Both teams receive identical information, so neither side gets a raw advantage. The real impact falls on flanking and dive heroes since the scan exposes anyone trying to sneak behind enemy lines.

This is huge. Time your flanks and ultimates around the scan timing. Pre-scan is the worst time to be deep in enemy territory.

Playing as attacker

Step 1: Push the capture point as a full six-player unit. The single narrow entrance to the Biological Engineering School is a designed kill corridor. Trickling in one at a time feeds the enemy team ultimate charge.

Step 2: Use Doctor Strange's portal to bypass the initial chokepoint entirely. If you don't have Doctor Strange, you're playing the map on hard mode. Genuinely consider locking him in.

Your opening skirmishes will take place around the Empire State School with an open courtyard outside that has narrow lanes. Prepare for intense close-range combat with only two directions to approach the building. The Thing attracts attention at the main gateway while other frontliners push through the Smile Deli alternate route.

For the second checkpoint, the first bend is near the golden Charging Jeff statue. This spot is a straight road cornered by flanking spots on either side. Heroes with vertical mobility can use elevated balconies as vantage points for poke damage. The flanking routes add strategic layers, but if your team's position isn't nailed down, enemies can waltz through Van Dyne's store and stab your backline.

After passing through the fortress gate, you enter a zigzag street with elevated platforms and cliffs that allow knocking enemies off the map. Use heroes like Angela, Invisible Woman, Emma Frost, or Spider-Man to push or pull enemies off cliffs. While not the main win condition, eliminating one or two enemies instantly gives your team a strong advantage.

For the final push, attackers must enter through different routes. Flying heroes can come from the second floor while tanks push through the center. Split attention and don't all funnel into the same approach.

Playing as defender

You have the structural advantage on this map. Don't waste it.

For the initial defense, hold the kill corridor. The single narrow entrance to the Empire State School is your strongest hold of the match. Stack a Peni nest, put Groot walls down, and force attackers to commit huge ult resources just to get through.

Watch for Doctor Strange portals. Every good attacker has Strange, and the portal will bypass your choke if you're not paying attention. Have one player on portal watch ready to body-block or shut it down.

For the final area, utilize high ground with long-range heroes and push attackers back toward the chokepoint. Defenders should leverage the elevated positions while forcing attackers into open kill zones.

If you want to run dive on defense, consider saving it for the second and third payload phases where the map opens up slightly. Diving on point one is asking to feed.

General things that matter

Track the UAV scan timing. The scan reveals ultimate readiness to the enemy team, which means holding an ultimate too long or telegraphing a combo becomes riskier. Pop your ult before the scan exposes you, or hold it until just after.

Use cliffs and edges for environmental kills. The map has multiple drop zones, and knockback heroes like Invisible Woman, Magneto, Storm, and Spider-Man can score free eliminations there.

Some destructible elements exist throughout the map. Certain balconies and walls can break, opening new sightlines. In practice, the fast pace of combat limits their impact. Positioning and timing matter far more than environmental destruction. So don't fixate on destructibles like you might on Midtown or Central Park.

For aerial heroes specifically, the Alchemax spire is the highest reachable point on any current map. The timeline glitch particles near the ceiling act as soft visual camouflage. From this height, you can initiate vertical dive-bomb plays where, by the time enemies hear your repulsors, you've already landed a full volley on their support line.

Don't sleep on the holographic billboards. The giant solid holographic advertisements for Alchemax are thick enough to block projectile fire and mask your silhouette completely. Iron Man players can hover behind the glowing 2099 screens to wait for the enemy Vanguard to commit their shields, then wrap around the screen for a surprise missile barrage.

Last thing: this map is dramatically defense-favored, so don't panic if you lose a few attack rounds while learning it. The skill curve is steep, especially because the UAV scan demands more game sense than other maps. Spend a few quick play games learning the scan timing and the Doctor Strange portal spots before you queue ranked.

Also, fun bonus: the Golden Jeff statue is linked to the "Shark to Shark" achievement. Perform an emote as Jeff the Land Shark while standing in front of the statue. Free achievement, easy to miss.
